In July 1981 only 25 per cent of those polled thought that the Prime Minister was doing a good job.27 For most of the period from August 1981 until February 1982 the government came third in the opinion polls, with many voters being attracted to the new Social Democratic Party (SDP), whose support reached just over 50 per cent in December, by which time Conservative backing had fallen to just 23 per cent.
ghting (and by the defection of many of its members as well as a considerable number of MPs to the SDP), the Conservatives won a landslide in the 1983 General Election, confounding all the dire predictions of the 1980-81 period.
Even the Liberal Democrats (created in 1988 from a merger of the Liberals and the SDP) increased their representation from 20 to 46 MPs, thanks to tactical voting against the sitting members in Con- servative seats.
